Reservoir Cleaning and Dam Inspection for the District of Port Edward
August 2, 2016
Over the years, water reservoirs can become loaded with sediment, clogging valves, fixtures and contributing to corrosion. Draining the reservoir can remove the accumulated sediment, however, this method is logistically difficult and requires a lot of resources, time and labour. It can also mean a temporary disruption of water service for residents and businesses.
The District of Port Edward regularly inspects and cleans its reservoir. They wanted to ensure that it stay operational and that residents didn’t experience service interruptions or issues with water quality.
Additionally, the District wanted to inspect Wolf Creek Dam as it is aged and it’s condition unknown. Potential issues could include infrastructure degradation such as cracks in the concrete wall and corrosion of brackets and steel gates. Dam diving is considered highly dangerous and as such, many factors must be taken into consideration to ensure safe diving practices in a high pressure environment that is built to control water levels.
Valard Dive Services was contracted to inspect the structural integrity of the reservoir, identify leaks (if any), assess the condition of submerged equipment and clean any buildup of sediment. Using a regimented hazmat process and a surface supply diving unit, the divers were able to thoroughly inspect the reservoir and pump out over one foot of sediment while protecting the integrity of the water source.
For Wolf Creek Dam, VDS conducted a thorough safety audit to ensure there were no breaches and a systematic video survey to inspect the condition of the dam, integrity of components and test for leaks and flow. A real-time, high definition video system was used so the client could see and communicate directly with the diver on both jobs.
VDS provided a detailed report with all corresponding video footage to the District. The inspections and subsequent cleaning proved that all the components in the reservoir and the dam are in healthy condition.
“With Valard Dive Services, we found a safe, efficient and cost-effective way to manage and maintain our District’s water systems. Having the ability to see and communicate with the diver allowed us to deal with issues immediately before they became potential problems. I’d recommend Valard Dive Services because of their impressive safety standards, high level of workmanship and professionalism.”
