Valard Dive Services Assists Structural Engineers
September 2, 2017
During the summer of 2017, Pembina Pipeline Corporation assessed the old Watson Island Pulp Mill site, near Prince Rupert, BC, in the interest of possibly building a propane terminal. The remaining infrastructure includes more than 200 piles supporting the loading dock.
As structural integrity of these is vital, Valard Dive Services was requested by HATCH to provide subsea inspections at the direction of their engineer. This was undertaken by a diver who swam to depths exceeding 40 feet, looking for anomalies, while having his view recorded with a high definition camera. Some of the piles needed closer inspection, requiring the removal of marine growth. This was difficult work, since it had to be completed manually, using a large scraper.
All videos and data were compiled into a report, which was then submitted to HATCH for review. The client was both pleased and impressed with the quality of work and the level of service.
