When it Comes to Underwater Welding, Valard Dive Services Runs a Tight Ship
July 16, 2019
Ridley Terminals Inc (RTI), located on Ridley Island in Prince Rupert owns and operates a world class marine bulk handling terminal, which provides continuous, high quality and high performance railcar unloading, product storage and vessel loading services.
As a leading North American trade “gateway” to world markets, their pier requires regular maintenance and construction. RTI contracted Valard Dive Services to replace and install almost 500 sacrificial anodes used to protect their steel piles from corroding.
Binding metal underwater is a daunting task that involves a lot of consideration towards safety, as well as, specialized training and equipment. Each anode was extremely heavy, weighing 96 kg, which required us to employ the crane on Valard’s dive boat to position the anode for welding.
Working in high winds and limited visibility added to our challenges. We completed the job within three months. It was an amazing opportunity with a lot of learning that’s helped to strengthen and grow our team.
